There is no specific number of times for seeking forgiveness mentioned in the authentic Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH) , but it has been reported that he (PBUH) used to seek forgiveness a lot. This is the Messenger of Allah, Muhammad, the best of mankind, informing the Muslims of his condition and saying: “By Allah, I seek forgiveness from Allah and repent to Him more than seventy times a day” (narrated by Al-Bukhari on the authority of Abu Hurairah). In the hadith of Al-Agharr Al-Muzani (may Allah be pleased with him), the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: “I seek forgiveness from Allah one hundred times a day” (narrated by Muslim). Repentance in itself is the greatest form of worship, and one of the best forms of worship. It has great effects on those who do it frequently and regularly. It brings peace of mind, relief, and tranquility to the heart. Allah grants its doer good enjoyment: {Seek forgiveness of your Lord, then repent to Him. He will grant you good enjoyment.} [Hud: 3]. Imam Al-Shanqeeti, may Allah have mercy on him, said in Adwaa Al-Bayan: “It appears that what is meant by good enjoyment is ample provision, comfortable living, and well-being in this world.”

It is a reason for the strength of the body, the health of the body, and safety from disabilities, plagues, and diseases {And O my people, ask forgiveness of your Lord and then repent to Him. He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in [continuing] showers and increase you in strength to your strength.} [Hud: 52].

It is also a way to ward off disasters, safety from accidents, security from trials and tribulations, and a preventer and protector from the descent of Allah’s punishment: {And Allah would not punish them while you are among them, nor would Allah punish them while they seek forgiveness.} [Al-Anfal: 33].

Whoever wants abundant rain, good offspring, a righteous son, abundant provision, and lawful money, let him adhere to seeking forgiveness, as Nuh said: {Then I said, “Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever Forgiving. He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in [continuing] showers. And give you increase in wealth and children and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers.”} [Nuh: 10-12].

The hadith has already been mentioned: (Whoever adheres to seeking forgiveness, Allah will provide for him a way out of every distress, a way out of every difficulty, and provide for him from where he does not expect.)

In seeking forgiveness there is expiation of sins, increase in good deeds, and elevation of ranks: {And say, “Forgive us,” and We will forgive you your sins and increase the doers of good.} [Al-Baqarah: 58].

In seeking forgiveness there is appeasing the Lord of the earth and the heavens, along with acknowledging the sin and shortcomings towards the Benefactor and the Generous. The sincere seeker of forgiveness meets his Lord as if he is saying: O Lord, I have erred, done wrong, sinned, and fallen short in Your right, and transgressed Your rights. I have come to You repentant, regretful, and seeking forgiveness, so pardon me, forgive me, pardon me, lessen my stumble, lessen my error, and erase my sin, for I have no Lord but You, and no god but You. So it gathers everything that is in the master of seeking forgiveness.. and it will come.

Imam Ibn Kathir says in this regard: “Whoever is characterized by the quality of seeking forgiveness, God will make his provision easy for him, make his affairs easy for him, and preserve his affairs and strength. If he is weak, he will become strong, or sick, he will be healed, or afflicted, he will be cured, or confused, he will be guided.”

“Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.” الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَتَطْمَئِنُّ قُلُوبُهُم بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ ۗ أَلَا بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ
